In "Gone with the Wind", Scarlet O'Hara starts out being in love with Ashley. She doesn't really understand what real love is, but fancies herself to be his kindred spirit or some such romantic fluff.
As the story goes on, we see that they are unsuitable for each other and that Ashley has, in fact, married a perfect saint who really is a wonderful fit for him.
But Scarlet refuses to let it go. Even when it is obvious that Rhett Butler is tailor-made for her, she cannot relent. Blind, foolish - destructive and wasteful.
We should learn from literature.
